This rectangular satchel, measuring approximately 12" x 18", is made from 4 ounce leather (goat, cow or pig, depending on availability and current leather market price). It is reinforced with leather strips and has a pointed flap, like an envelope. The reinforcements cross on the back (like a vertical line through an X). On the front they hold a brass ring which serves at the flap closure. The flap can be tied to it with leather laces or thong. The side reinforcements hold a brass ring at each upper corner to which the 42" strap is anchored. At the middle of the top edge is a carrying handle. The strap and handle allow the satchel to be hung from a T-pole (furca) or slung from the shoulder when marching "light". This satchel design is based from one on Trajan's Column and from fragments of one at Bar Hill.

It has 3 tie-down loops strongly stitched to the top edge of the bag for tying to the crossbar of a T-pole (furca). It was possibly used to carry a cloak or to store other personal items at night, since equipment was left outside the sleeping tent.
